Rittenhouse Rye 100 Proof: Don’t Let the Plastic Screw-off Cap Scare You Away

Rittenhouse Rye 100 Proof

Straight Rye Whiskey

Tasting Notes:

Color:  Thin caramel

Proof / ABV%: 100 Proof / 50%ABV

Nose:  Fruity.  Like walking by a cider mill, a good week and a half after they pressed the apples that are now collected in heaps and waiting to be composted.  Some vanilla also.

Body:  Surprising amount of body for a rye that claims no specific barrel age.  It’s well rounded for something so young.  Rye sharpness mellowed with a candy sweetness.

Palate:  Very spicy, as a rye should be, but has a fair amount of toffee.  Cinnamon, clove, and apples?  Again, reminds me of cider indirectly--and in a good way.

Finish:  The spiciness lingers on the side of your tongue, but the mouthfeel is gone with the whiskey.  At 19.99 a bottle, taking another sip is not a problem.
